What is the Truth?

We have so much information at our fingertips these days. Almost everyone has one or more electronic gadgets on hand. With just a click, you can practically search up everything you are looking for. Even when you are not looking, subscriptions and news updates will be sent automatically to your email and social media accounts.

Ask yourself: How many hours are you tuned into social media in a day? Are you equipped with more knowledge after hours of browsing, or do you feel anxious and perplexed with the content on the subject matter?

I am not judging. But rather, I want to say that I have fallen into this rabbit hole myself. I prided myself for getting up-to-date with breaking news, video, audio and featured stories. Furthermore, I would search out juicy nuggets of entertainment and celebrity news too. It is like going to a buffet, where the different food varieties available out there is the media, and it is wetting your appetite more and more, getting you addicted to its taste and you want to try them all. The best is, the data out there is for free! And they are updated constantly.

Especially these past three years, with all the lockdowns and work-from-home. I found myself spending even more time on my laptop, browsing and lapping up all the latest news on the internet. Many were news reports about the cold wars, ongoing pandemic, frequent natural disasters, worrisome economy, health and science behind Covid-19 vaccines and its aftermath, crimes, politics and more.

I have learnt plenty. Yet, some of the news articles have affected my emotions. I began to feel fearful, disbelief and a sense of unrest crept into my heart. I started asking myself what is the “truth?” This time, instead of looking to the internet for answers, I turn to God and to His living word, storing them in my heart.

There is nothing wrong to be informed about current news events. It’s natural that we want to know first-hand what’s happening around the world. However, don’t let the world we live in make us lose our focus on God. Spend time also with God because the moment you draw close to Him, He comes running to you with open arms.

“And do not be conformed to this world [any longer with its superficial values and customs], but be transformed and progressively changed [as you mature spiritually] by the renewing of your mind [focusing on godly values and ethical attitudes], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His plan and purpose for you].”

– Romans 12:2 AMP
